Given:

The length of the diameter of the drum = 28 cm

Area of Steel sheet required to make the drum = 2816 cm²

To find:

The height of the drum

Solution:

The radius of the drum made of steel = \frac{diameter}{2} = \frac{28}{2}  = 14 \:cm

Since the drum is covered with a lid so the area of the steel sheet given is  the total surface area of the cylindrical drum.

We have the formula as,

  • Total Surface Area of a cylinder = [Area of the lid] + [Area of the base] + [CSA ] = πr² + πr² + 2πrh = 2πr(r + h)

Let "h" cm be the height of the drum.

Now, by substituting the given values in the formula we will find the height of the drum

2816 = 2 × \frac{22}{7} × 14 × (14 + h)

⇒ 2816 = 88 × (14 + h)

⇒ 14 + h = \frac{2816}{88}

⇒ 14 + h = 32

⇒ h = 32 - 14

h = 18 cm

Thus, the height of the drum is 18 cm.
