hypotenuse^2=Base^2+perpendicular^2.

40^2=base^2+24^2

base^2=1600-576

We know that by pythagoras theorem ,

 {ac}^{2}  =  {ab}^{2}  +  {bc}^{2}

 {40}^{2}  =  {24}^{2}  +  {x}^{2}

1600  - 576 =  {x}^{2}

1024 =  {x}^{2}

x = 32

hence the third side is 32cm
