The length of other side is 12 cm

Solution:

Given that length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is 13 cm

One of the side of the triangle is 5 cm long

To find: length of the other side

Pythagorean theorem, states that the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of squares of the lengths of other two sides of the right-angled triangle.

By above theorem,

c^2 = a^2 + b^2

where,

c = length of hypotenuse

a = length of one side of right angled triangle

b = length of another side of right angled triangle

From given information,

c = 13 cm

a = 5 cm

b = ?

Substituting we get,

13^2 = 5^2 + b^2\\\\169 = 25 + b^2\\\\b^2 = 169 - 25\\\\b^2 = 144\\\\b = \pm 12

Ignoring negative value,

b = 12

Thus length of other side is 12 cm
