Length of the longest pole that can be put in a room = Length of the diagonal inside the room

Length of the diagonal = √( l2 + b2 + h2)

= √(12^2 + 9^2 + 8^2)

= √(144+81+64)

= √289

= 157

Hence, the length of the longest pole that can be put in the room is 17 m.
