.. Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie, comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and others. And having no respect he ceases to love.” — Fyodor Dostoevsky
You make yourself believe a lie, in order to make your life a little easier. A lie is a paradigm under which you operate to avoid pain. A lie is something you want to believe in because the truth would hurt your ego. You lie to yourself because you seek comfort. Well, comfort is a bit overrated; you lie to yourself because you are scared of the unknown. I wish there might have been an easier way to put this, but one must learn to accept the harsh reality. However, you must stop, for continuing to lie will eat away your soul, thereby causing you untold amounts of pain.
Lying to yourself is equivalent to deep betrayal. If you spend a lot of time convincing yourself that you’re someone different than who you truly feel you are from the inside, then life is going to be much tougher for you than it needs to be.
Sometimes, you know you’re lying to yourself, but the inner voice that’s goading you to deceive yourself screams more loudly. In this case, allow yourself the space to spot the lies you tell to your inner self. Don’t beat yourself up over the discoveries you’ll make. And then there are other times when the difference between a lie and the truth can be subtle. Your brain will try to “logically” trick you into believing a lie.
