‘The Lost child’ is a story written by Mulk Raj Anand. In this story a child visits a village fair with his parents.
He is happy and excited. Fascinated by the toy shops on the way, he demands for them but receives a cold stare
of refusal by his father.
Then they pass through a mustard field there he is mesmerized by the nature. Finally they reach the fair. There
he is attracted to a sweet meat seller, a flower seller, a balloon seller and a snake charmer. He murmurs while
asking for everything but he knows that he will be refused. So without waiting for an answer he keeps moving
forward. Then he comes near a roundabout where he gathers courage and boldly requests for it. But alas! His
parents were not there, he is lost!! He frantically looks around everywhere but couldn’t find them.
He approaches near a crowded shrine, about to get trampled he shrieks in a loud voice and a man comes to help
him. The child is crying inconsolably asking for his parents. The man tries to soothe him by offering a ride in
the roundabout, to listen to music of the snake charmer, offers a rainbow coloured balloon, a garland to put
around his neck, and a gift of sweets too. BUT the child refuses everything; all that he wants is his ‘mother and
father’.
