Lungs always contain a residual volume of air to facilitate the exchange of gases that take place in the lungs.

This volume of air that is left in the lungs for a better exchange of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide is known as the residual volume.

Not only this residual volume is helpful in the exchange of gases but it also is responsible for the protection of lungs so that our lungs doesn't collapse.
