The main objective of the National Forest Policy is to maintain at least one-third of the geographical area under forest or tree cover. 20% of the land in the plains and 60% of the land in the hills, and all together 33% of the total geographical area should be under forest or tree cover.

According to the Forest Survey of India, December 2015, only 24.16% of India's geographical area is under forest and tree cover.
