The man Jack wanted to kill the baby, he had promised himself he would not smile till he does that. But instead of the baby, there was a teddy bear in the crib. So he was perhaps frustrated because of that. Then he relied upon his sense of smell to deduce the child had already left, but had been there before. So I think it may be that as Jack somehow got to know about the toddler, he was satisfied.
