In ancient times, the Markanda river was known as Aruna.

It is a seasonal river. It originates in the Shivalik Hills from Himachal Pradesh and Haryana and flows along Punjab before meeting its tributary Ghaggar.

The basin here is divided into two parts- Bangar( the higher area that does not gets flooded) and Khadar( the lower area that is prone to floods).
