Question :

The marked price of an article is rupees 500. The shopkeeper gives a discount of 5% but still makes a profit of 25%. Find the Cost price.

Answer:

The cost prize of the article is Rs. 380.

Given:

The marked price(M.P.) of the article is rupees 500.

Discount is 5% of M.P.

Profit is 25% of the cost price(C.P.)

To find:

C.P. of the article.

Explanation:

Discount = Rs. (500×5/100)

               = Rs. (5×5)

               = Rs. 25.

∴ Selling price(S.P.) of the article_

Rs.(500-25)

= Rs. 475.

Let, the C.P. of the article be, 'n'.

∴ Profit = (n×25/100)

            = n/4

∴ S.P. = ( n + \frac{n}{4})

         = (\frac{4n+n}{4}) [∵ The L.C.M. of the denominators is 4.]

         = \frac{5n}{4}

∴ According to the problem:

\frac{5n}{4} = 475

⇒ 5n = (475×4)

⇒ 5n = 1900

⇒ n = (1900÷5)

⇒ n = Rs. 380.

∴ The C.P. of the article is Rs. 380.
