16 =  \frac{13 + 16 + 18 + x + 12 + 17 + 14 + 20}{8}  \\ ................... \\ 16 =  \frac{110 + x}{8}  \\ 128 =  x + 110 \\ x = 128 - 110

Sum of observations = 110 + x

Number of observations = 8

Mean = 16

mean \:  =  \frac{sum \: of \: observations}{number \: of \: observations}

16=110+x/8

128 = 110 + x

x = 128 - 110

x = 18
