The mean of 31 result is 60.If the mean of the first 16 result is 58 and that of the last 16 is 62,find the 16th result

Answer: 60


Step-by-step explanation:

Let the sum of all the 31 results be X, the sum of first 16 be Y and sum of last 16 be Z.


Now,

Mean = sum of all observations/Total no. Of observations


60 = X/31

Therefore X= 1860


Similarly

Y = 16 × 58.

Z = 16 × 62

Y+Z = 16 × 58 + 16 × 62

= 1920


Now,

Y + Z - 16th observation = X (as 16th observation is observed in both Y and Z this we will deduct it once)


1920 - 16th observation = 1860


By solving,

16th observation = 1920-1860 = 60.
