▶ Question - The mean of 40 observations is 160. It was detected on rechecking that the value 165 was wrongly copied as 125. Find the correct mean.

▶ Given :-

The mean of 40 observations = 160

The wrong value of 165 = 125

▶ Explanation :-

=> 160 = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........... + x40 / 40

=> x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........ + x40 = 160 × 40

=> x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........ + x40 = 6400

Difference between the numbers = 165 - 125

Difference between the numbers = 40

Corrected sum = 6400 + 40 = 6440

New mean = Sum of all observations / Total no.of observations

= 6440 / 40

= 161

New mean = 161

Answer:> 160 = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........... + x40 / 40

=> x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........ + x40 = 160 × 40

=> x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ........ + x40 = 6400

Difference between the numbers = 165 - 125

Difference between the numbers = 40

Corrected sum = 6400 + 40 = 6440

New mean = Sum of all observations / Total no.of observations

= 6440 / 40

= 161

New mean = 161
