the mean of 5 numbers=18
mean=sum of observations/no of observations
=x/5=18
transpose 5 to R.H.S
x=5*18
x=90
if one no. is excluded
then x/4=16
x=4*16
x=64
now, 90-64=26
excluded number is 26

Answer: Excluded number is 26.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • The mean of a set of numbers is the sum of all the numbers divided by the number of items in the set. If the mean of 5 numbers is 18, the sum of these 5 numbers is 18 * 5 = 90.
  • If one number is excluded and the mean of the remaining 4 numbers is 16, then the sum of these 4 numbers is 16 * 4 = 64.
  • The excluded number can be found by subtracting the sum of the remaining numbers from the original sum, that is 90 - 64 = 26. Hence, the excluded number is 26.
