Mean of five numbers = 40
total value of five numbers = 40×5 = 200
if one number number is included then
Mean of six numbers = 38
so,total value of six numbers = 38×6= 228

therefore, excluded number = 228- 200= 28

The excluded number is 48

Step-by-step explanation:

Average = \frac{\text{Sum of all observations}}{\text{No. of observations}}

The mean of five numbers is 40.

40 = \frac{\text{Sum of 5 numbers}}{5}

40 \times 5 = \text{Sum of 5 numbers}

200= \text{Sum of 5 numbers}

Let the excluded number be x

So, new sum = 200-x

No. of observations = 5-1=4

If one number is excluded then their mean becomes 38.

38=\frac{200-x}{4}

38 \times 4 = 200-x

152=200-x

x=200-152

x=48

Hence The excluded number is 48
