SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • The mean of the 20 values in a given dataset is 50

  • When these values are rearranged in a certain Order, the mean of the first 10 values and the last 11 values are 40 and 60 respectively.

TO DETERMINE

The tenth value after the rearrangement.

EVALUATION

Here it is given that the mean of the 20 values in a given dataset is 50

So sum of 20 values in the given dataset

= 20 × 50

= 1000

Now when these values are rearranged in a certain Order, the mean of the first 10 values and the last 11 values are 40 and 60 respectively.

Sum of first 10 values in the dataset

= 10 × 40

= 400

Sum of last 11 values in the dataset

= 11 × 60

= 660

So the required tenth value after the rearrangement

 \sf{ = (400 + 660) - 1000}

 \sf{ = 1060 - 1000}

 \sf{ = 60}
