'The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.' (Albert Einstein) ... But though Einstein was among the greatest intellects in human history, he also had a most down-to-earth approach to life. His quotation above testifies to that fact.

Show More Our world grows every second of every day and, to thrive in this constantly changing 21st century world, one cannot simply just be described as merely intelligent. As stated by Albert Einstein, “the measure of intelligence is the ability to change”. In respects to this, the C-FB Gifted and Talented Program has helped me prepare to be a highly intelligent individual with the potential to promote change and the capability to be changed as well. This adaptability has been developed in many ways; however, by being identified as a gifted student has allowed me to participate in higher level classes, which have encouraged me to be independent in my studies, to collaborate with others to apply the knowledge gained from those studies, and to make connections between subject areas to create meaning and importance for my own personal understanding of the world. Higher level classes, such as the Pre-Diploma Classes and International Baccalaureate classes, have been an amazing experience in that there is an expectation of autonomy. With the rigor of the classes and the amount of material the teachers must cover, I have gradually learned how to take control of my learning. Intelligence is the capacity for constructive thinking, which involves a discovery of appropriate qualities and relations of the ideas, that are before us and bringing in of other relevant ideas.

All these definitions define intelligence in their own way, but they are incomplete, because they give incomplete picture. In view of this problem, many psychologists have accepted a definition by Wechsler. David Wechsler (1944) who devised the intelligence tests for children as well as adults tried to provide a somewhat comprehensive definition:

“Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of an individual to think rationally, to act purposefully and to deal effectively with his environment”.

This definition includes three important processes, viz., to act purposefully means, to act in a determined way without any ambiguity, to think appropriately in a rational way without any prejudices and to deal effectively with the environment or to adjust in a proper way with the environment.

The measure of intelligent is the ability to change

It is absolutely true one’s ability to change determines one’s intelligence level. Change is a great quality. If you can adapt, you can achieve anything.

One really has to change to be successful. Have you ever seen a river? How meandering and winding is its course! Do you know why? Well, river is the greatest example of change. Whenever any obstacle comes in its way, it either makes its course round or flows over it. And finally reaches its destination, the sea. Similarly, if a man wishes to be successful, he must adapt himself to the challenges he faces. He must not stop making efforts. He must change his strategies and be successful. Sometimes it is wiser to go round an obstacle than be deterred by its formidable height.

Even in the evolutionary process only those animals survived that were quick to adapt; big animals such as dinosaurs under whose thuds shook the earth were wiped out. On the contrary small animals like platypuses, cockroaches, bees, turtles, etc. could survive because they adapted to the changes.

All great men and women achieved success following the principle of change. Intelligence may help us in life, but change definitely helps us much more. So learn to change yourself according to the situation.
