let hypotenuse = x cm

so other side = x - 14 cm                       [ third side will always be less that hypotenuse]

x² = 42² + ( x-14 )²

x² = 1764 + ( x² + 14² - 2×x×14)         [ since (a-b)² = a² + b² - 2ab ]

x² = 1764 + x² + 196 - 28x

⇒  28x = 1960

⇒ x = 70 cm

other side = 70 - 14 = 56 cm

hence hypotenuse = 70 cm and other side = 56 cm
