The complete question is:-
The mixture of which of the following gases is used in the instruments used for the respiration of divers?
(a) helium-oxygen
(b) oxygen-nitrogen
(c) hydrogen-nitrogen
(d) none of these
Answer:-
The mixture of helium-oxygen is used in the instruments used for the respiration of divers.
- Scuba divers carry a diving apparatus (air tanks). It mainly consists of oxygen and nitrogen in particular proportions.
- It is because the pressure is at the depth of the sea is greater and more nitrogen gets dissolved into the bloodstream. But upon ascent, pressure decreases and dissolved nitrogen gas comes out of the stream in the form of bubbles which may obstruct the blood flow.
- Since helium has a low solubility in blood, it is added to the tank of air carried by the scuba divers.
