Given : The mode of a distribution is 12 and the mean is 3

To Find : median

Solution:

When the frequencies are not properly distributed it is called as an asymmetrical / skewed distribution.

If it is moderately asymmetrical distribution

the below mentioned empirical relationship holds good

Mean – Mode = 3 (Mean – Median)

=> Mode = 3 Median - 2 Mean

it was  given by Karl Pearson

Mode = 12

Mean = 3

=> 12 = 3(Median) - 2(3)

=> 12 + 6  = 3(Median)

=> 18 =  3(Median)

=> 6 = Median

the median is  6
