Answer:
The model that states that atom is a sphere of positive charge and electrons are embedded inside it was given by Sir J.J.Thomson.
J.J.THOMSON MODEL:
- J. J. Thomson proposed the size of the atom.
- He said that the atom was spherical in shape with a radius of approximately 10^-15 m.
- He proposed that atom was a sphere of positive charge, in which the negatively charged electrons were embedded.
- According to him, this arrangement gives the electrostatic stability to the atom.
- This model of atom is also called plum pudding model, raisin pudding model , watermelon model.
- He assumed the mass of watermelon as positive charge and the seeds as electrons.
FAILURE OF MODEL:
- According to Rutherford's alpha ray scattering experiment, the positive charges in the atom are concentrated in the centre of atom, which is against the Thomson model.
- The electrons are not embedded in the atom. Rather they are revolving in circular orbits around the nucleus.
