For example, I could claim that the most important character is Lord Canterville. He is the most important character because he sold the haunted house to the Otis family.

The entire story revolves around the ghost. It started with Sir Simon telling Mr. Otis about the haunted Canterville chase which was because of the ghost. The Otis family is not scared of the ghost and the ghost made numerous attempts to scare them but in vain. Finally he feels molested by the twins and gave up all hope of ever
frightening this rude American family, and contented himself with creeping about the passages. Finally little Virginia cried with the ghost for his sins, and prayed for him so that the angel of death could have mercy on him.
