Hey friend,
Here is your answer:
After the process of mastication that is the process of chewing of food during which it mixes with saliva in the mouth, it is rolled into a bolus which is easy to swallow. This bolus is then pushed down the gullet or oesophagus ( food pipe ). It takes about 6 seconds for the solid food to reach the stomach after it is swallowed. While swallowing the food, a flap called the epiglottis prevents it from entering the lungs and cause chocking. The walls through the alimentary canal push the food in a wave - like action called peristalsis.
Hope it helps u.
