Each myelin sheath is formed by the concentric wrapping of an oligodendrocyte or Schwann cell process around the axon. More precisely, myelin speeds the transmission of electrical impulses called action potentials along myelinated axons by insulating the axon and reducing axonal membrane capacitance.
