The National Institution for Transforming India is also referred as NITI Aayog. It was formed through a resolution of the Union Cabinet on January 1, 2015.


It was set up keeping in mind to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and to enhance cooperative federalism to encourage the involvement of State Governments of India in the economic policy through a bottom-up approach.


It replaced the Planning Commission which followed a top-down model. It is the premier policy 'Think Tank' of the Government of India which helps both directional and policy inputs.
