“The Neolithic Culture in Kashmir region was contemporary to the Harappan civilisation” due to the following reasons:
Some of the Neolithic sites in Kashmir includes Burzahom, Gofkral, Hariparigom, Pampur and Waztal. Burzahom means ‘place of birth’ in Kashmiri. This site provides evidences for the Harappan Civilization. In Burzahom pit houses have been excavated. The neolithic people living here dug square or circular pits about 4 metres in depth and covered them with thatch balanced on wooden poles. They had steps leading to the pit Shelters. Sheep, goats and cattle were domesticated by the Neolithic people of Kashmir like their contemporaries at Mehrgarh. In Burzahom, people traded with the people of Harappan civilization. The Neolithic dwellers of Kashmir used tools made of bones and polished stones as well. Like their contemporaries at Mehrgarh ,they too had learnt to make pottery using the Potter's wheel. The dead were buried in pits sometime along with some domestic animals. The use of  barley, wheat and lentils suggests that the contacts of Neolithic people of Kashmir had been established with Central Asia. The people of Central Asia had interaction with Harappan civilization.
