Following are the factors that prove that the nineteenth and twentieth century marked the beginning of urbanization of Delhi under the British:

1. In 1911, the colonial government officially announced to shift its capital from Calcutta to Delhi. For the construction of Delhi as a capital city, the British government called two architects, Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker, Calcutta to Delhi, to design Delhi.

2. An extension scheme called the Lahore Gate

Improvement Scheme was introduced by Robert Clarke in the year 1888, to draw the residents away from the old towns to a newly developed market square.

3. The colonial government established the Delhi improvement trust in 1936. The space in the houses was distributed according to new laws of privacy.

4.  To serve the purpose of clean and healthy space, the city was supplied with better water, sewage disposal and proper drainage facilities.
