The nth term of sequence 4,7,10,13,16 is 3n + 1

Given : The sequence is 4 , 7 , 10 , 13 , 16

To find : The nth term

Tip :

If in an arithmetic sequence

First term = a

Common difference = d

Then nth term of the sequence

= a + ( n - 1 )d

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Write down the given sequence

The given sequence is

4 , 7 , 10 , 13 , 16

Step 2 of 3 :

Find first term and common difference

The given sequence is an arithmetic sequence

First term = a = 4

Common Difference = d = 7 - 4 = 3

Step 3 of 3 :

Find the nth term

Hence the required nth term of the sequence

 \sf = a + ( n - 1 )d

 \sf = 4 + ( n - 1 ) \times 3

 \sf = 4 + 3 n - 3

 \sf = 3 n + 1
