A+B = (A+B) upto least decimal places

A = 1.234

B = 5.29 (least and 2 decimal places 2 & 9)

1.234 + 5.29 = 6.52

Significant figures are 6,5 & 2 so there are 3 significant figures.

The number of significant figure in (A+B) is 3.

Explanation:

  • A = 1.234
  • B = 5.29
  • A+B = 6.524

Rule of significant figures in case of addition:

'Limit the answer to the least number of decimal place'

  • A has 3 digits to the right of decimal.
  • B has 2 digits to the right of decimal.
  • So the answer must be limited up to 2 decimal places only.
  • The answer 6.524 is limited to 6.52.

Thus, the number of significant figures in answer 6.52 is 3.

The answer has 3 significant figures: 6, 5, 2.
