The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of a battle between an aging, experienced
fisherman, Santiago, and a large marlin. The story opens with Santiago having gone 84
days without catching a fish.
In
t was eighty-four days since Santiago had caught a fish. He had really been unlucky. So
unlucky was he that he was now being regarded as ‘salao' or the worst form of unluckiness.
Manolin, the young boy who was Santiago's apprentice, had been forbidden by his parents to
sail with Santiago and instead to fish with successful fishermen. Manolin, however, was very
fond of the old man and continued to visit Santiago's shack each night, hauling his fishing
gear, preparing food, talking about American baseball and his favourite player, Joe DiMaggio.
Santiago felt confident that his unlucky streak was near its end and told Manolin that on the
following day, he will venture far out into the Gulf Stream, north of Cuba in the Straits of
Florida to fish.
