  • Cosmoid scales consist of three layers. The foremost outer layer consisting of a hard enamel. The second layer consisting of a a specialised dentine called cosmine (hence the name cosmoid). The third innermost layer is isopedine or a vascular bony structure to protect the insides of the fish.
