- Early fishes used to have several layers of scales to protect themselves from the harsh conditions the earth was going through.
- Cosmoid scales was one of the adaptations possesed by fishes for survival.
- Cosmoid scales consist of three layers. The foremost outer layer consisting of a hard enamel. The second layer consisting of a a specialised dentine called cosmine (hence the name cosmoid). The third innermost layer is isopedine or a vascular bony structure to protect the insides of the fish.
- Inside, all these layers early fishes used to have further modifications depending on habitat, weather and feeding conditions.
