The outer covering composed of cells in plants is called as Epidermis. The epidermis covers the roots, stem, plants and branches of the plant. Epidermis is covered with a layer of wax which helps the plant in various ways.

The very first thing this waxy substance helps with is controlling the loss of water from the plant. This outer layer of epidermis also helps in exchange of gases. It also is responsible for absorption of water and minerals in roots.
