Answer:

Paika armed rebellion in March 1817 can be called as the first war of independence of India as it was almost 40 years ahead of 1857. The Union Government of India made this announcement in October 2017. It is popularly called as "Paika bidroha" in oriya. Paikas were traditional warriors of Odhisha and with advent of East India company rule, they were deprived of their role and became economically weak .

Explanation:

Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyahdar Mohapatra Bhramarabar Ray was the leader of the rebellion. The rebellion was short lived although it spread through modern day Odhisha. Economic exploitation by East India company by way of steep taxes and increase in salt price were the immediate reasons. The rebellion was crushed cruelly by Britishers
