- The 3 largest producers of the mineral oil or crude oil in the India are Rajasthan (23.7%), Gujarat (12.5%), Assam (12.1%).
- In India, petroleum was first discovered at the Digboi in Assam. Digboi is town in Tinsukia district in north--eastern state of the Assam. Petroleum was first discovered in late 19th century.
- Digboi is called as Oil City of Assam. First refinery was started in early 1901. Digboi has oldest oil well in the operation.
- Gujarat houses about 20% of the total estimated crude oil reserves of India & about 4% of the total estimated of natural gas reserves.
- Many companies as ONGC, OIL , IOCL, GAIL are involved in oil industry of the Assam. Assam has the 4 refineries-- the Noonmati refinery, the Namuligarh Refinery, the Bongaigaon Refinery, the Digboi Refinery.
