In three dimensional crystal structure, unit cell is characterised by :–

  • It's dimensions along the three edges a, b, c. These edges may or may not be mutually perpendicular.

  • Angles between the edges, \alpha,\beta, \gamma. Thus, a unit cell is characterized by six parameters a, b, c, \alpha, \beta, \gamma.

This parameters of a typical unit cell are shown in above figure.
