Since we know that,
According to first equation of motion :-
v = u + at
Where v = final velocity,
u = initial velocity, a = acceleration and t = time.
When any object is thrown vertically upward the value of a is replaced by g which represents 'acceleration due to gravity'.
New equation : v = u + gt
Moreover, here the object is thrown against gravity so, value of g will e negative ( -ve ).
Final equation,
v = u + (-g)(t)
v = u - gt
