The percentage composition of carbon by mole in methane is 20% hence option (b) is correct choice.

The percentage composition of carbon by mole in methane is..

(a) 80%            (b) 20%             (c) 75 %            (d) 25%

  • The molecule formula of methane is CH₄.
  • one mole of methane molecule contains one mole of carbon and four moles of hydrogen.
  • number of mole of carbon in methane = 1
  • number of moles of atom in a methane molecule = 1 + 4 = 5

Concept : percentage composition of an element by mole in a compound is given by,

= number of mole of element in the compound/total number of moles of atom in the compound × 100

Percentage composition of carbon by mole in methane = 1/5 × 100 = 20%.

[ note : Don't confuse with percentage composition by mass and by mole. percentage composition by mass is found by mass of element/mass of compound × 100. and by this way, percentage composition of carbon in methane would be 12g/16g × 100 = 75%. ]
