Atomic number 12 means 12 protons and therefore 12 electrons… 12 electrons will fill the energy levels thusly. 2,8,2 So three electron shells means period 3 and 2 electrons in the outer shell means group 2. Since it has 2 valance electrons (alkaline earth metals) it belongs to 2nd group.
