The period of a signal is 100 ms. What is its frequency in kilohertz? First we change 100 ms to seconds, and then we calculate the frequency from the period (1 Hz = 10−3 kHz). Frequency is the rate of change with respect to time.

Concept:

The number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time is known as the frequency. It is given by the formula f = 1/ time period. Hertz(Hz) is its S.I unit.. It is denoted by “f”. The frequency is defined in terms of cycles/second.

Given:

The period of signal is 200ms(millisecond)

Find:

The frequency in kilohertz(kHz).

Solution:

Period(T) = 100ms

                = 100×10⁻³

                 = 0.1 sec

       we know that, frequency(f) = 1/T

       ∴ f = 1/0.1

              10 Hz

1 Hz = 0.001 kHZ

 ∴ 10 Hz = 10⁻² kHz

Hence the frequency in kilohertz for a period of signal 200ms will be 10⁻² kHz.
