(a)Gold is a noble metal, that is, it the least reactive metal. Gold does not react with oxygen and moisture which is present in the air and it does not lose its shine after several years.

(b) Gold does not react with oxygen at any temperature and, up to 100 °C, is resistant to attack from ozone. Some free halogens react with gold. Gold is strongly attacked by fluorine at dull-red heat to form gold(III) fluoride.
