I think that this statement is true as in its way it promises hope for the society and the elderly people living in it .....
the decision of Abel to marry widow sherrocks
enables all elderly people to take their own decision ..
the quarrelling of the two sisters proves to be pessimistic ..
HOPE IT HELPS

Yes it's true that it is pessimistic that old people are taken less care of. But it is also optimistic that the old people choose to live merrily despite their old age. In the play dear departed we have the old man named Abel Merryweather. He was kind and had 2 daughters Elizabeth and mrs.slater. they were after the property that Abel had but didn't show much care towards Abel. He in his old-age to pass his time used to go for a bar and then met a lady John shorrocks. He then felt like he had met someone who could take care of him truly.
So he wanted to stay with mrs.shorrocks as she is the one who truly cares despite his daughters who are after his money.
so this play states that Abel chose affection and love over the fake affections of his daughters.
This way it is optimistic.
hope this helps.
