The social theme of the poem is 'To live and to let live.' The poem talks about nature and the living beings created by nature who all have equal right to live on the Earth. Be it a venomous snake or human beings everyone has the right to live and consume the resources of the Earth. In order to sustain in the world, one should live in harmony with each other.
The religious theme which is highlighted in the poem is the dilemma which the poet gets into after attempting to kill the snake. He falls into the web of the guilt of killing the creation of nature and started to pray for its return.
