I was fortunate enough to be a part of a tree plantation drive held at school. We were in class 7 at that time and did not know much about tree planting. Also, then it was more of a chore back then. We dutifully planted the saplings and forgot about them. The school gardener took great care of them. Soon enough, the saplings started sprouting leaves. With time, they grew taller. It was only when I saw my tree growing that I started taking interest in it. The lean trunk started growing thicker. The foliage got denser and my tree now offered some shade. I was growing impatient. I couldn't wait to see the fruit. Then one day, about 3 years after having planted it, I spotted a colour change. The tree was finally giving out fruit! The green Indian gooseberries (amla) looked beautiful! Anyone passing by would pick up a gooseberry or two. My tree now gives abundant fruit each year. Though I am through with schooling, I still find myself smiling when I think of my tree.
