In two dimensional system, x and y as per the conventions are the two axes of Cartesian plane. x(horizontal) gives the abscissa of the point and y(vertical) gives the ordinate, together they give the exact coordinate of a point in the plane.
The two axes have negative arms and positive arms relative to the origin.

THE POINT OF INTERSECTION OF COORDINATE AXES IS CALLED THE ORIGIN (O).

this point is known as origin.(0,0) is the co-ordinate. This is the point where the x-axis and the y-axis intersects.
hope this helps!!!
