Given:

The population of a city was 4343645 in the year 2001 and 4181087 in 2011

To find:

Estimate the increase in population by rounding off to the nearest thousand

Solution:

For the year 2001, the population of the city was, 4343645

For the year 2011, the population of the city was, 4181087

4181087 - 4343645 = - 162558

a negative sign indicates the decrease in population.

thus for 2021, there will be again a decrease in population by 162558. Thus we have,

4181087 - 162558 = 4018529

For the year 2021, the population of the city will be, 4018529

4018529 ≈ 4019000

Therefore, the decrease in population by rounding off to the nearest thousand value is, 4019000
