Since 'distance covered' has been asked, we cannot put the values directly into the equation or else we will get displacement. To find distance covered differentiate the equation and you get v= 2t-4. Put t=0, t =3, v= 0 etc. and plot a v-t graph. Then find the area enclosed under the graph. Add the magnitudes of the areas. You will get distance covered = 5 m.
