Newton's second law of motion pertains to the behavior of objects for which all existing forces are not balanced. The second law states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object.

In doing so,the cricket player is increasing the time during which the high velocity of the moving ball decreases to zero. Thus, the acceleration of the ball decreased and therefore the impact of catching the ball also reduced.
If the ball stopped suddenly, the rate of change of momentum of the ball will be large, therefore the player wanted to use more force to catch it,thus may hurt himself.
SOME OTHER SITUATIONS SIMILAR TO THIS ARE:
1)In a high jump athletic event, the athletes are made to fall on a cushion bed.
2)Karate player breaks a piece of ice with a single blow
All these are based on the Newton's second law of motion.
