The postmaster called Ali ‘a pest’ as he was in hurry. He had to go out to the country with his family. The postmaster was not right in doing so. He did not understand Ali’s pain. He had no sympathy and empathy for him. However, when he himself went through the same pain on account of his daughter’s illness, he regretted his rude behavior with Ali. In order to make amends for his mistake, he went to Ali’s grave at the end with Lakshmi Das and placed Miriam’s letter on it.

No, this statement is not right. Ali was never a pest as he never disturbed anyone who was working in the post office. He just sat silently waiting for his name to be called as he waited for a letter from his daughter Miriam who had left him after marriage. It was the post office staff who enjoyed making fun of him. Ali did not retaliate even to these comments.

The only time when Ali actually asked if a letter had come for him was when he went to the post office after a long break. He had fallen ill and wanted to know if the much-anticipated letter had come in his absence. This is what made the postmaster get angry and call him a pest. He should not have done this even though he was in a hurry.
