The potential energy U between two atoms in a diatomic molecules
as a function of the distance x between atoms has been shown in the
figure. The atoms are
(a) attracted when x lies between A and B and
are repelled when x lies between B and C
(b) attracted when x lies between B and C and
are repelled when x lies between A and B
(c) are attracted when they reach B from C
(d) are repelled when they reach B from A

When brought from infinity, the atoms get attracted because of the inter-atomic electrostatic force of attraction.

At point B, the force of attraction is maximum, whereas the potential energy is minimal.

However, if these atoms are brought closer to each other than x = B, then the force of repulsion between the two nuclei will be initiated. Therefore, the P.E. will certainly increase.

Hence, repulsion occurs when x placed between A and B, and attraction when it lies between B and C.

Ans) (b) attracted when x lies between B and C and

are repelled when x lies between A and B

Answer:

Atoms theory

Explanation:

If we took atom at infinity P:E is zero

When they are tried to move towards each other attractive force exist and if distance bwt two atoms is less then 10^-12 m there will be attractive force.
